Although Bison bison did not migrate to Southwest Florida in great numbers during the 1800s, teeth from their ancestors (Bison antiquus) are such frequent finds that there may have been great herds of them throughout the state during the late Pleistocene epoch (10,000 to 500,000 years ago.
